The Tottenham defender scored twice as Tottenham prolonged their unbeaten run in away games in the top division and delivered the Toffees their initial loss at their new home.

The Toffees were unbeaten in their five previous fixtures at their new ground at Bramley-Moore Dock, having left Goodison Park behind after 133 years at the conclusion of the previous campaign.

But Tottenham's leader the Dutchman pounced twice from corners in the opening 45 minutes to place their strong form at jeopardy, and they were unable to mount a comeback before the midfielder - assisted by ex-Everton forward the Brazilian - headed home a third to put the game to bed.

Jake O'Brien thought he had levelled the tally a short while after Van de Ven's first goal, glancing a powerful header past Guglielmo Vicario from an Everton corner.

The Portuguese striker, meanwhile, failed to convert a number of chances, while Vicario made a succession of fine saves to guarantee the London club went five matches on the road without defeat in the English top flight.

But the video assistant referee stepped in, instructing Craig Pawson to review the score on the screen and the referee decided that the winger and Iliman Ndiaye were in an illegal position and had interfered with the Tottenham goalkeeper.

The win moves the manager's side up to third in the Premier League, five points off north London rivals and leaders Arsenal.

Everton remain 14th and sit half a dozen points clear of the drop zone.

Tottenham analysis: The defender excels in role at each end of pitch

Following a uninspiring midweek display in the European competition against the French side, where they managed a mere attempts on target, the manager chose Randal Kolo Muani in attack instead of former Toffees player Richarlison.

The new arrival was failed to influence the game before being substituted for Richarlison after 60 minutes on the pitch, but it turns out he wasn't needed in the final outcome.

Defender the Dutchman transformed into an offensive threat to be reckoned with.

Tottenham's opening strike came from a well-worked set-piece play, with the midfielder heading the ball toward the face of goal for an unmarked Van de Ven to head home.

And Ven de Ven - filling in as skipper in the Argentine's absence - added his next goal in added time as he rose above the England keeper to nod in.

Van de Ven was equally impressive in defence, partnering effectively with his defensive colleague as the duo handled excellently with the 34 crosses sent their way by Everton.

Everton analysis: Everton lacking finishing touch

Everton's new home had been a fortress, but it appears the novelty may have faded slightly and supporters headed to the exits after the midfielder's third for Spurs.

The end in the team's unbeaten home run won't be a massive concern for the manager, but their striker situation will be.

The forward and the other striker - the Everton's two recognised strikers - had netted only a single goal between them before the weekend's outing.

And they were unable to add to that poor tally on a wet and gloomy evening on in Liverpool.

The striker's form was summed up when he opted to bicycle-kick a clear chance from close range, despite having space and opportunity to readjust for a more conventional attempt that would have challenged Vicario.

Barry, as well, was unable to influence the game after coming on for the starter in the 65th minute.

It wasn't for a lack of opportunity. The majority of Everton's offensive moves came through Grealish and the forward, who tirelessly whipped dangerous balls into the Tottenham box.
