EU Might Respond to ‘Unjustified’ US Visa Bans, Official Says
The European Union could “respond swiftly and decisively” in response to what it deems “unwarranted” visa bans imposed by the US on five Europeans involved in combating digital hatred and disinformation, an EU official has said.
EU Officials Condemn US Move as ‘Coercion’
European leaders such as the French president charged the US administration of “coercion and intimidation”, after the visa restrictions were placed on individuals that were central to campaigns to introduce laws regulating American tech companies.
“For far too long, ideologues in Europe have led coordinated campaigns to coerce US companies to suppress American viewpoints they disagree with,” wrote a senior US official online. “The current administration will not stand for such actions of extraterritorial censorship.”
Broad Criticism Across Europe
Germany, Spain, the UK and a chorus of EU officials joined France in criticizing the decision.
The restrictions were imposed this week against a former EU commissioner who helped draft the bloc’s Digital Services Act (DSA), as well as several anti-disinformation campaigners, from Germany and the United Kingdom.
An Escalating Conflict Regarding Governance
The DSA is viewed by Washington as a form of censorship, whereas EU authorities contend the regulations are essential to combat hate speech and falsehoods.
This disagreement risks becoming a facet of a far wider existing political and ideological clash involving Washington and Europe.
